Under general supervision, an incumbent of this class records testimony, confidential minutes of meetings, or other matters, either by stenotype machine or manually. Responsibilities also involve maintaining records of various proceedings; ensuring adequate secretarial services are provided for the Grand Jury and/or confidential meetings and maintaining confidential documents and records for the District Attorney and/or the Office of the District Attorney. Supervision may be exercised over a small number of clerical staff. Does related work as required.

- A High school or equivalency diploma and either: (a) certification in Court Reporting by an approved credentialing authority; or completion of the Certified Shorthand Reporting Test administered by the New York State Department of Education and two (2) years of full-time work experience in general verbatim reporting; or (b) three (3) years of full-time work experience in general verbatim reporting using Computer Aided Transcription (CAT) equipment; or stenographic experience which involved the taking and transcribing of verbatim records.

- (1) The number of years of experience required in the minimum qualifications is based upon the presumption of full-time employment. Part-time experience will be prorated based on a 35 hour workweek. (2) Verified and documented volunteer (unpaid) experience will only be credited when specifically allowed by the job description or examination announcement.

- Education beyond the secondary level must be from an institution recognized or accredited by the Board of Regents of the New York State Department of Education as a post-secondary, degree-granting institution.
