Under general supervision of a higher-level maintenance or administrative position, incumbents perform skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance of heavy equipment (gasoline or diesel self-propelled and non-self-propelled engine equipment). Incumbents are responsible for a wide variety of repairs and maintenance work on all types of landfill, automotive, diesel and heavy equipment vehicles. This position does performs maintenance and repair exclusively on a variety of vehicles, and work is not limited to passenger cars. In addition, this class is responsible for carrying out a preventive maintenance program, required maintenance, and mechanical repairs on disabled equipment in the field. This class differs from the Auto Mechanic III by the complexity of assignment and the requirement of various licensures. Incumbents may function as lead worker on specific projects. Does related work as required.

- Possession of a high school, equivalency or automotive trade school diploma and three years of experience where the primary responsibility of the position was performing automotive repair work.
- Substitutions
- Satisfactory completion of 30 credits of post-high school education in the field of automotive repair or maintenance, or closely related field, may be substituted for one year of the above stated experience.

- (1) The number of years of experience required in the minimum qualifications is based upon the presumption of full-time employment. Part-time experience will be prorated based on a 35 hour workweek. (2) Verified and documented volunteer (unpaid) experience will only be credited when specifically allowed by the job description or examination announcement.

- Education beyond the secondary level must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
