For certain civil service titles, Westchester County Department of Human Resources holds examinations continuously throughout the year. Unlike the other examinations listed in our Web site, which are held periodically and have application deadlines, candidates may apply at any time to take continuous recruitment examinations.
Candidates must submit the appropriate filing fee along with a completed application for examination or employment demonstrating that they meet the minimum qualifications listed on the examination announcement. If approved, candidates compete in the examination shortly after applying.
The names of those who receive passing scores are interfiled according to grade with the names of previous candidates already on the eligible list for the title in which they competed. Candidates remain on the list for one year or until appointed from the list, whichever comes first. These examinations can be promotional or open-competitive and may be held for positions in the county government, Westchester Medical Center and local jurisdictions.
There are currently three kinds of continuous recruitment exams:
- Training & Experience Exams (T&E’s) are examinations held using an “Evaluation of Training and Experience” format. This consists of candidates completing an application for examination or employment and in addition, for some titles, completing a detailed questionnaire about their educational and employment backgrounds. This questionnaire may be in paper form or it may be “web-based” on the Internet. Completing the application and questionnaire constitutes the entire exam. Grades on this type of exam involve applying a scale to the training and experience portion that ranks candidates based on the relevance and extent of their educational and employment backgrounds. Often, continuous recruitment training & experience exams are for positions that require a license or certificate or are in the medical/health professions.
- Information Technology Examinations are held for candidates seeking employment opportunities in the field of information technology. Similar to above, this consists of candidates completing an application for examination or employment, and in addition completing a detailed “web-based” questionnaire about their relevant educational and employment backgrounds. In addition candidates participate in a pass/fail "PC-administered" multiple choice test, held at our testing facility, that assesses knowledge and skills related to information technology careers. Grades on this type of exam are based on both passing the multiple choice test and applying a scale to the training and experience portion that ranks candidates based on the relevance and extent of their educational and employment backgrounds.
- PC-Administered Examinations are for positions in various careers including some entry and mid-level clerical, water and wastewater treatment and social caseworker titles. This consists of candidates completing an application for examination or employment and participating, at our testing facility, in a job-related, “PC-administered” multiple choice test. In addition, depending on the title, candidates may participate in pass/fail performance tests in competencies such as keyboarding, database maintenance and foreign language proficiency. Grades on this type of exam are based on scores received on the multiple choice test.
