Under general supervision, incumbents function as fully competent, licensed Professional Engineers in all conventional aspects of the area of assignment. An incumbent independently performs assignments with instructions as to the general results expected. On a project basis, the Senior Engineer plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. The incumbent serves as project leader in design work or as a resident engineer on major design or construction jobs concerned primarily with planning, inspection or testing of all mechanical installations. Senior Engineers give direction to, review and inspect the work of sub-professional engineers, construction coordinators, drafters, technicians and others. This level differs from the Associate Engineer in that the Associate is responsible for the administrative supervision of a unit, delegating project assignments, and performing code enforcement functions or overseeing code-compliant designs. This level differs from the Assistant Engineer in the complexity of design assignments, supervision of technical staff, and in the requirement of a license to practice as a Professional Engineer. Does related work as required.
- Required
- Possession of valid license to practice as a Professional Engineer in the State of New York and either (a) a Bachelor's Degree in mechanical engineering and three years of field and office experience where the primary function of the position was in mechanical engineering, one year of which must have been in the design of construction projects and one of which must have been in construction administration; or (b) a Bachelor's Degree in mechanical technology and four years of experience as described in (a).
- Definition
- Construction administration, in this instance, is defined as work which may include, but is not limited to, two or more of the following areas: project budgeting; cost estimating and control; project planning and scheduling; monitoring of construction progress; preparing project and/or bid specifications; ensuring code compliance; meeting with contractors and/or architects to discuss project issues, or authorizing payment on completed work in accordance with contracts.
- Substitutions
- A Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering may substitute for one year of the field and office experience in mechanical engineering. There is no substitute for the one year of experience in design of construction projects or the one year of experience in construction administration.
- Notes
- (1) The number of years of experience required in the minimum qualifications is based upon the presumption of full-time employment. Part-time experience will be prorated based on a 35 hour workweek. (2) Verified and documented volunteer (unpaid) experience will only be credited when specifically allowed by the job description or examination announcement.
- Special Notes
- Education beyond the secondary level must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
