Under general supervision, this class functions as a fully competent Professional Engineer in public health or environmental engineering or in the more specialized phases of public health and environmental engineering and public health programs. The incumbent shall apply engineering principles for the detection, evaluation, control and management of those factors in the environment which influence public health. The incumbent independently performs assignments with instructions as to general results expected, plans and performs work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Senior Engineers give direction to and review the daily work of engineers, sanitarians and others who assist on specific assignments. Incumbents in this title will be required to possess NYS Professional Engineering licensure upon successful completion of their probationary period. This level differs from the NYS licensed Associate Engineer in that the Associate is responsible for the administrative supervision of a unit. This level differs from the Assistant Engineer in the greater responsibility and complexity of assignments, along with the responsibility for training of lower-level engineers within the department. Does related work as required.
- Required
- A Bachelor's degree in Engineering followed by three years of engineering experience, two of which must have been in a position where the primary function of the position was in public health or sanitary engineering; and possess either: (a) current Professional Engineering licensure from a state or political subdivision of the United States; or (b) a NYS Board for Engineering letter of eligibility to sit for the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) examination.
- Substitutions
- A Master's degree in sanitary, environmental, chemical, public health or civil engineering with a sanitary option, or closely related field may be substituted for one year of the required general engineering experience. There is no substitute for the specialized experience.
- Special Requirements
- (1) Incumbents must possess NYS Professional Engineering license and registration at time of permanent appointment and maintain same while in the title. (2) Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of New York will be required at time of appointment and maintain same while in the title.
- Notes
- (1) The number of years of experience required in the minimum qualifications is based upon the presumption of full-time employment. Part-time experience will be prorated based on a 35 hour workweek. (2) Verified and documented volunteer (unpaid) experience will only be credited when specifically allowed by the job description or examination announcement.

- Education beyond the secondary level must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
