Located in the Department of Laboratories and Research - Valhalla: Under general supervision of the Medical Examiner, an incumbent in this position serves as the laboratory safety officer responsible for the development, implementation, and documentation of the environmental management and employee safety programs for the Department of Laboratories and Research consistent with Federal, State and departmental rules and regulations. This department is unique in that it procures and disposes of a high volume of hazardous chemical, biological and radiological substances. For this reason, the incumbent is responsible for the control of these substances through complex technical processes. This position is designed to promote safe, responsible environmental management enforcing laboratory safety protocols, providing training on safety procedures, maintaining safety records, and acting as a resource for laboratory staff regarding safety concerns. As environmental officer for the entire department, acting on behalf of the Medical Examiner, will direct changes to operations in all aspects of laboratory and material handling operations. Does related work as required.
Required
Either (a) Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field and three years of environmental health and safety experience in a laboratory setting; or (b) Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, and five years of laboratory experience.
Substitutions
Satisfactory completion of 30 credits towards a Master’s degree in one of the above fields of study may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
Notes
(1) The number of years of experience required in the minimum qualifications is based upon the presumption of full-time employment. Part-time experience will be prorated based on a 35 hour workweek. (2) Verified and documented volunteer (unpaid) experience will only be credited when specifically allowed by the job description or examination announcement.
Special Notes
Education beyond the secondary level must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
