Located in the Department of Environmental Facilities – Various Locations: Under general supervision, an incumbent of this position performs a wide variety of journeyman level maintenance, repair and installation work on water and wastewater treatment plant equipment including the layout of jobs sufficiently complex to require advance planning, and the maintenance of necessary supplies and records. Work is performed with considerable independence and work may result from written or oral instructions. The incumbent may work as part of a crew or as lead worker on specific projects and may supervise a number of lower level maintenance and labor employees. The journeyman is fully proficient in the skills and practices of the trade, with the full knowledge of the principles, tools and techniques. The journeyman has responsibility for determining the methods, techniques, materials, and/or devices best suited to complete projects. Work at this grade may be completed with little or no check during progress or on completion. Supervisor may check overall work to see that it meets trade standards. Does related work as required.
Required
A high school or equivalency diploma and either: (a) four years of experience which involved the installation, inspection, routine maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment; two years of which must have been in a water treatment plant or pumping facility; or (b) satisfactory completion of a two year post high school or trade school course in electrical, plumbing and/or HVAC and two years of experience as stated in (a), both of which must have been in a water treatment plant or pumping facility.
Substitutions
Satisfactory completion of 30 credits, with a major course of study in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Technology, Construction Technology, the Mechanical Trades or a related field, may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to two years of the above required general work experience. There is no substitution allowed for the two years of specialized experience required above.
Special Requirements
(1) Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of New York will be required at time of appointment and maintain same while in the title. (2) Depending on work assignment, must meet standards of OSHA regulation 1910.134 Respiratory Protection, and will be required to meet Federal, State and local standards with respect to health and safety.
Notes
(1) Apprenticeship training or training gained by the completion of technical courses in mechanical maintenance and repair at a school or institute or branch of the armed Services may be substituted for the above training and experience on a year-for-year basis. There is no substitution allowed for the two years of specialized experience required above. (2) The number of years of experience required in the minimum qualifications is based upon the presumption of full-time employment. Part-time experience will be prorated based on a 35 hour workweek. (3) Verified and documented volunteer (unpaid) experience will only be credited when specifically allowed by the job description or examination announcement.
Special Notes
Education beyond the secondary level must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
Salary: $60,825 - $75,815
